I just finished watching the newest addition into the third star trek movie with the new cast. So heres what I thought.
Short Answer: It was good. I really enjoyed this film. The story picked felt more like a sequel of the first film (2009) than one that progressed after the events of into darkness. Which I thought was a great choice. The cast was great, and Chris Pine has officially filled the shoes of Captain James Tiberius Kirk. The action was good, I laughed a few times and the entire time I felt engaged. Overall, go see it. It has my recommendation and approval.
Longer Answer: The movie takes places 3 years into the U.S.S Enterprise's 5 year voyage into deep space. The story, which I will try not to spoil, feels far more like a general adventure that the crew would go on than a progress of another movie that just servers to set up the next. After a rocky 2nd movie in the new timeline, this movie does a great job of getting the movie franchise back on track. The story was rather simple, which I enjoyed for a change, and though I wasn't thrilled with the villain at first, as the movie progressed and we got to see his motives, I was more engaged with him. All around the movie is just fun. I'm sure Star Trek purists can find things to complain about, but for your average movie goer, like myself, I didn't find too many flaws. I can see why some people won't love it, as the movie is far slower and smaller scale than the previous two movies were. The director Justin Lin (fast and furious), had a big role of taking the franchise from JJ Abrams, likes action. Speaking of action, did I mention there was a lot of it. And I mean A lot! Surprisingly, this is something that beyond benefited greatly from. It's never boring or repetitive, and there were some great edge-of-your-seat thrills that Lin did a great job with. I don't say it often, but I am actually excited for the next film in the franchise and too see what other adventurous Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew get into.
