Who you gonna call?
Ghostbusters (2016) made its premier in cinemas this past weekend. The anticipation has been mixed with people on one hand excited and eager to see the new reboot of the beloved franchise, and on the other side is filled with people vocalizing there complaints with the decision to make the new Ghostbuster's team all female. Just as the anticipation has been mixed so have the reviews. So ill give mine.
Short Answer: It was good. If you are looking for a fun romp to zone out of the world for a couple hours you'll enjoy it. I smile and laughed a bit and overall it kept me engaged. Its no perfect movie by any stretch, the characterization is a bit too cartoony and the nods at the original film it was based on, leaned on the side of overkill.
It is good but the 1984 classic still holds the trophy.
Longer Answer: Ok. The movie was good, the casting was good, the special effects were good, all around it was good just nothing great. The casting, pulled largly from SNL, played there characters well. To my surprise, I especially enjoyed Leslie Jones' character, as she is someone I normally get annoyed with in some of her previous roles. The characterization felt very cartoony, which Im sure was on purpose, but because of it, the characters lacked a lot of depth and felt far more kiddish than the original. And that really is my biggest complaint is this movie felt far more like a kids movie than a ghostbusters film. The dialogue was mostly to just get to a punchline and the bright neon lights seem to trying to grab children's attention. So if you are going into the movie just know that. It does a good job at it, but it is more of a kids film. On of my biggest praises was that of Chris Hemsworth in his role. I was a little worried if the "god of thunder" himself could transition himself into a comedy movie, but he did it with ease. Some of his line and his personality as the teams receptionist had me actually laughing out loud, which is something I don't do often in the theater. The final battle mirrored that of the original and ended very similarly, I won't spoil anything other than that!
Overall: The movie is goofy, light-hearted and fun, if you go into knowing that and not expecting anything else you'll enjoy it. If you are a die-hard fan who hates the concept of a reboot, than you'll for sure hate it.
So go see it! or don't! it doesn't matter to me!
